Various types of design
professionals are available to help improve your home.
Design professionals can help you create a practical and aesthetically
pleasing plan that includes the features you want. Their training and
experience help them design a project to fit your budget and your home's
space limitations.
Architects
As the design professionals with the most training, architects are the
most popular starting point for larger projects. It's important to choose
an architect that specializes in remodeling rather than new construction.
Also make sure that they are accustomed to working on projects with a
similar size and budget as yours.
Design/Build Contractors
Design/Build contractors, a recent innovation, handle both the design and
construction phases of the job. By integrating the design and construction
phases they can often deliver a smoother overall job that stays more
tightly on budget. When checking on such a firm, make sure they have
sufficient experience in both the design and construction roles.
Home Center Staff Designers:
This is the quick, easy, and cheap route to some basic design ideas. (Home
center staff designers often have lots of experience with lower budget
jobs.) Design skill varies widely and their schedule may not allow enough
time to examine your individual situation properly. They are also unlikely
to recommend solutions that don't use the store's products.
