Top Ten Basic Rules to Hiring A Contractor

  1. Always hire a licensed contractor

  2. Ask for a State Contractors License Number

  3. Don’t sign a contract on the spot

  4. Never pay cash for a down payment

  5. Don’t allow commencement of work without a signed contract by both parties

  6. Always do a background check on the contractor

  7. Review your contract thoroughly

  8. Don’t accept a P.O. Box number for an address on a contract

  9. Ask for referrals

Most importantly, if you do not feel comfortable with any details of the contract then do not sign it.  Hire a consultant to review the contract for you and make the changes necessary to assure you get exactly what you are paying for.
